The History of Memory Foam
Earlier in history, due to the enormous amount of g-force during liftoff, NASA realized they needed to develop a much-needed substance that could relieve astronauts of the pressure not accustomed to the human body. One of the first things they realized was that the substance that the astronauts settled into needed to conform to their bodies while dispersing pressure to other areas of their bodies rather than in just one area.
Rather than creating separate molds for each astronaut’s body, they developed what is now called memory foam. This visco-elastic material was able to conform to their bodies and provide the astronauts with a much more bearable takeoff which distributed to astronauts’’ body weight throughout the visco foam while adjusting immediately to any shifts that may occur in their movements.
After the memory foam material had been in use at NASA, one of the world’s largest foam companies, Fagerdala World Foams of Sweden, began experiments to see if they could provide a similar foam material for consumers and household usage in the 1980’s. About eleven years later, the Swedish mattress company called Tempurpedic released the first memory foam mattress for household usage. And the new Tempurpedic mattress met Sweden with rave reviews! Since that time, many manufacturers began developing their own memory foam mattresses, some very different than the others, in order to supply the booming demand for the innovative memory foam mattresses.
Today, you will find that there are many options of memoryfoam mattresses to choose from ranging from ‘a little too cheap’ to very pricey, but of the best quality available.
