Memory Foam Mattresses vs. Air Mattresses

Air mattresses are becoming known not just as camping accessories, but as a way for individuals to select their comfort level by using a remote attached to a pump beneath the air mattress. This sounds like a wonderful new invention but there are a few things that should seriously be considered when comparing an air chamber mattress to a memory foam mattress.

The first thing that should be considered is that the air chamber mattress is usually controlled by a machine beneath the mattress. In contrast, a memory foam mattress does not need a machine, or pump, in order to adjust to your body. Air chamber beds are also much more resilient, or ‘springy’, than that of memory foam mattresses due to the fact that it is air pressure that is providing the selected levels of support. Please note that the pressure causing the ‘springy’ effect is oftentimes what causes discomfort and the need to toss and turn when sleeping.

The air chamber mattress is normally divided in sections. In many of the air mattresses, there are three sections that can be adjusted to the individual’s preferences. Memory foam mattresses automatically will adjust both to your body’s contours, keeping your body and spine aligned, as well as the temperature of your body due to the temperature sensitive memory foam material in the mattress. Other precautions to take when considering an air chamber bed are the warranties.

Since the air mattress sleep system uses a machine, or pump, what happens if the pump breaks down? How much will it cost? How long will the air chamber bed be covered by the warranty if there is one provided?

Memory foam mattressMemory foam mattresses do not require the complexities that air chamber beds require to match the individual’s comfort levels. We have observed many, many sleep systems or all sorts and still believe the memory foam mattress and latex foam (for firmer foam mattress needs) mattresses’ contouring material is the best that is available in the mattress marketplace today.

Memory Foam Mattress vs Foam Topper/Mattress Pads

What is The Difference between a Memory Foam Mattress and Foam Topper/Mattress Pads?

There is a significant difference between a memory foam mattress and a foam topper.

In regards to the mattress pad/topper, the topper is literally placed on top of your existing innerspring mattress. This layer will give a bed the feel of a memory foam mattress; however, in many cases the results may not be so good. The reason is that many mattresses are not firm enough to give the same feel as a memory foam mattress. Many mattresses are considerably older and dip in the middle and so on.

The result of a memory foam topper placed on top will be a similar effect. The firmer the mattress beneath the mattress pad, the firmer and more like a real memory foam mattress it can be. Also, since the case would be dipping in the middle, in response to the older mattress, one possibility to overcome this would be to purchase a firmer, denser memory foam topper/pad. There is no guarantee that this will alleviate the situation, but it has worked for some individuals who decided to try a memory foam topper first before they ended up purchasing their first visco elastic mattress.

Another pitfall that may need to be overcome if you decide to purchase a thicker, denser foam mattress pad would be which bed sheets to use. This has posed a problem for many people in the past due to the fact that bed sheets are basically produced to cover a ten-inch mattress. If the added topper is more than that of the capacity of the bed sheets then either search for larger bed sheets or make sure the memory foam topper pad is within the range of the bed sheet span. This, of course, can be evaluated by simply using a tape measure or any other type of measuring device. Again, if the mattress is older, feeling lumpy and dipping then a 1-inch topper may not provide the best results when using a memory foam topper.
